A football shirt is never just a T-shirt. It is the colour you wear to the match, the badge you pull on when your team plays on TV, the training top you live in all week and, sometimes, the retro classic that brings back a whole season of memories. Choosing the right one sounds simple until you are faced with home, away and third designs, different sleeve lengths, several print and material finishes and the question every buyer asks at least once: which size do I actually need?
This guide walks through every choice in the order that makes sense when you shop, using real shirts from our catalogue as examples. By the end you will know how to pick the right design, the right fit and the right finish, how to add your own name and number, and what to expect when your order is on its way. If you would rather jump straight in, you can browse club jerseys, retro shirts or training tops at any point.
1. Start with your club and the season
Most people begin with a club, and that is the right place to start. Once you have the club, the next decision is the season and the design. Clubs usually release a home shirt, an away shirt and often a third shirt each season, and each one has its own personality.
- Home shirts carry the club’s traditional colours. They are the shirts most fans picture first and the safest choice if you want one shirt that says exactly who you support.
- Away shirts are designed to contrast with the home colours, so designers often take more risks with patterns, darker tones and unusual trims. They tend to look great away from the stadium too.
- Third shirts are the most experimental of the three and are popular with fans who already own the home and away designs.

Take the Arsenal Home Shirt 25–26 as an example. It keeps the classic red body and white sleeves, so it is instantly recognisable on the terrace or in a five-a-side game. The Man City Home Shirt 25–26 does the same for City fans with its sky-blue body and white diagonal sash, and the Chelsea Home Match Shirt 25–26 sticks to the royal blue Chelsea are known for. If you want the current season, these are the shirts to look at first.
Away designs are where personal taste comes in. The 2023–2024 Real Madrid Away Shirt swaps Madrid’s famous white for deep navy with a tonal geometric pattern and gold trims on the collar and cuffs. It is the kind of shirt that works just as well with jeans on a night out as it does at the match.

A useful rule: if this is your first shirt for a club, choose the home design. If you already own the home shirt, the away or third shirt adds variety and is often the one people end up wearing most outside matchdays.
2. Get the size right first time
Sizing is the question we are asked about most, so it is worth taking a minute over it. Our shirts run from Small to XL, and every product page lists the sizes available for that exact shirt. If a size is out of stock in the options you have chosen, it appears greyed out, so you never add something we cannot send. Before you choose, open the size chart; on every product page you will also find a Size guide link right next to the size options, which opens the chart without leaving the page.
How should a football shirt fit?
That depends on how you will wear it. Football shirts are cut to move with you, so they generally sit closer to the body than a casual T-shirt. A few practical tips:
- For playing or training, most people stay with their normal size. A closer fit means less fabric flapping around and a shirt that stays in place when you move.
- For everyday wear, some fans prefer a slightly roomier feel over a T-shirt or hoodie. If you are between sizes and want a relaxed fit, the size above is usually the comfortable choice.
- Compare with a shirt you already own. Lay your favourite shirt flat, measure across the chest and down the length, and compare it with the chart. It is the most reliable way to choose.
If our standard sizes do not suit you, we also offer manual or custom sizing: send us your measurements with the contact form and we will come back to you. And if something does not fit as expected, we offer exchanges for a different size of the same item, subject to availability, within our returns policy.
3. Choose your finish: sublimation, embroidery or print
Many of our shirts let you choose how the design is applied, and the option you pick is shown on the product page as Material. The names can look technical, so here is what each one means in practice:
- Sublimation — the design is transferred into the fabric with heat, so colours become part of the material instead of sitting on top of it. The result is smooth and light, with nothing to peel or crack, which makes it a popular choice for shirts that are worn and washed often.
- Embroidery — details such as the badge and logos are stitched in thread. Embroidery gives a raised, textured look that many fans associate with a premium shirt.
- DG print — a printed finish applied to the surface of the fabric, giving sharp, clean detail.
- Emb and DG print — combines both: embroidered details with printed elements, for fans who want the texture of stitching and the crispness of print on one shirt.
Not every shirt offers every option, and the price can change with the option you choose: once you have picked your size, material and sleeves, the price shown on the page updates to that exact combination. If you are unsure which finish suits how you will wear the shirt, ask us before you order.
4. Long sleeves or short sleeves?
Where a shirt offers both, you will see a Sleeves choice on the product page. Short sleeves are the classic matchday look and the obvious choice for warm weather and for playing. Long sleeves are a great option for cooler evenings, for layering under a jacket, and for anyone who loves the slightly old-school look of a long-sleeved kit. If you play in the evening or wear your shirt to games through the winter, a long-sleeved version can easily become your favourite.
5. Make it yours: add a name and number

Nothing makes a shirt feel more personal than your own name and number on the back. We create custom soccer jerseys with your preferred name and number, and adding them takes seconds: on any product page, type the name and number into the Write Name and Number (on back) box before you press Add to cart — for example Ronaldo 7, or your own surname and lucky number like the Man Utd 24/25 Home Shirt above. What you type is saved with your order, so you can check it in your cart before you pay.
A few tips for personalisation:
- Check the spelling twice before adding to cart — the name is printed exactly as you type it.
- Keep it short if you can. Shorter names and one- or two-digit numbers look cleanest across the shoulders.
- Think about gifts. A shirt with a child’s name or a friend’s nickname and their birthday as the number is one of the most memorable presents a football fan can receive.
One important point: personalised or custom-made jerseys (including names, numbers or patches) cannot be returned or exchanged unless there is a manufacturing defect, so it is worth double-checking the size as well as the spelling. The full details are in our returns policy.
6. Retro classics: shirts with a story

Some shirts are bought for this season; others are bought for a memory. Retro shirts recreate designs from past seasons, and they have become some of the most popular pieces in any football wardrobe because they work as fashion as much as football kit. Our retro collection is the place to look.
The Inter Milan 92–94 Home Jersey is a perfect example of why fans love retro: black and blue stripes, a white polo collar with a button placket, the Umbro logo and the Fiorucci sponsor that defined Inter’s look in the early nineties. Worn with jeans or tailored trousers, it looks every bit as good off the pitch as it did on it.
For Barça fans, the Retro Barca 1999 Jersey marks the club’s centenary year, with the dates 1899–1999 on the crest and the famous blaugrana colours split down the body. Shirts like these are conversation starters: wear one to a game and you will almost certainly be asked where you found it.
When choosing a retro shirt, think about the era you love and how you will wear it. Polo collars and bold stripes suit a smarter casual look; simpler crew-neck designs layer easily under jackets. The same sizing advice applies: check the size chart, and choose the size above if you want a relaxed, vintage-style fit.
7. Training tops: the shirt you will wear most

Matchday shirts get the attention, but training tops are often the pieces fans wear the most. A drill top is a long-sleeved training layer, usually with a quarter-zip neck, that teams wear for warm-ups and sessions. The Barça Navy Strike Drill Top is a good example: navy with a tonal pattern, a quarter-zip neck and the club crest, it works for a cold training session, a morning run or simply as an everyday layer.
Why choose a drill top? It covers more seasons than a short-sleeved shirt, it layers neatly under a jacket and it still shows your colours. Browse all drill tops to see the full range across clubs, or look at our polos if you want something smarter for travelling to a game.
8. Full kits and matching sets
If you play regularly, a complete kit saves you putting an outfit together piece by piece. Our club kits bring the shirt and shorts together in one design — the Barca 23/24 Away Kit is one example. Kits are a great choice for five-a-side teams, for young players who want to look like their heroes, and for anyone who simply wants the full matchday look.
9. How to care for your football shirt
A little care keeps colours bright and badges looking new for much longer. These general tips work for most football shirts:
- Turn it inside out before washing to protect badges, prints and embroidery.
- Wash cool and use a gentle cycle; hot water is the quickest way to fade colours and damage printed details.
- Skip the fabric softener, which can clog performance fabrics and affect how they handle sweat.
- Air dry flat or on a hanger rather than in a tumble dryer.
- Never iron directly over a print or a name and number. If you must iron, do it inside out on a low setting.
Always follow the care label on your shirt first — it is the best guide for that particular garment.
